- Some years ago all roofs were made of thatch which was made of rye straw or wheaten straw. This straw was never allowed be put through a threshing machine but the grain was beaten out of it by flails while it was still tied in sheaves. This straw was kept for the thatching. Then there were certain men called thatchers who went around to do the work. The straw was tied on by means of pointed sticks called "scolb."
- People sometimes had not enough house room in which to store their grain and they made what was known as a "siogán". First layers of briars was put at the bottom to raise the oats from the ground.(continues on next page)
