    May Day. Early on this day it is customary to "bring in the Summer" which is usually a sprig of gorse and some evergreens. This is also called "Nettlesome Day" and the young people amuse themselves by gathering nettles and nettling one another.
    St John's Night. On this night it is customary to light bushes near every potato garden so that the smoke would go over the potatoes and so prevent the blight
