- There are four forges in the parish. Two forges are run by Walter Tallis, one in Chapel St, Mullinahone and the other at the road-side in Modeshill. Michael Pollard's forge is situated at Kilvemnow cross-roads, and Thomas Gunn's is also in the townland of Kilvemnow. The smith's ancestors have all been in the same business. The roof of the forge usually consists of boards covered with felt. Zinc roofs are not at all suitable for a forge, because the coal would rot the zinc away. The door is sometimes horse shoe shaped. The big fire is kept lighting by a very large bellows; some forges contain two fire-places.(continues on next page)
