- There is a tradition that Cromwell spent a night in Poulacapple when passing through on his way to Fethard.
When entering the house one of his soldiers made a lunge at a little child which was playing in the doorway, but Cromwell restrained him, and on entering the house took the child on his knee and fondled it. The child began playing with Cromwell's chain and on seeing this Cromwell took a trinket from it and gave it to the child. This child afterwards became a priest, Rev. Fr. Phelan, in the diocese of Ossory- Informant
