- 1. The belief that fairies sometimes carried away a young girl leaving in her place an old hag or fuighlea [?] seems to have existed in parts of this parish up to about forty years ago. Brigid Clery was of Ballyvalea [?] burned by her relatives and neighbours who were firmly convinced that they were really burning a witch.
2. The driving of beasts through fire on St. John's Eve to keep away sickness seems to have visited in Charles Kickham's time. He refers to the custom in his poem, St Johns Eve" - "His cows the farmer slowly [?] drove across the blaze he knew not why".
