    It was in '37 on a bright September day,
    And all the Gaels of Royal Meath to
    Trim had mowed their way,
    The sun shone down in splendour,
    And the truth I will unfold
    This game caused great excitement
    Among both young and old
    And from the early morning came
    crowds from far and near
    To see as old folks called it the
    "Hurling of the Year."

    And in Kildalkey village just as I passed
    it by,
    The Dymphnas were all smiling and
    there hopes were very high,
    They said they'd show the Rovers what
    conqueres they were
    And that they'd beat them scores
    in Trim that very day.
    They had every mode of transport
    already oiled and brushed,
    And even Nelson's dog - van was
    sending up the dust
