  1. "I well remember the last day I went to school. It was in the month of Mya and myself and the other gossuns used to be playing buttons when we go tout. We would often play "odd or even" when we were in the school and indeed the master would not mind because he would not know what we were at.
He often fell asleep in the school after play-time and one day he was dozing and I saw two grand buttons on the back of his coat - he used to wear a long swallow - tail coat - and I stole up behind him and cut them off because I lost all I had when playing "pitch and toss" in the school-yard before we came in to the school.
When he wakened another lad told him and you may say 'I got a bathering'. I ran out when he let me go and I never went back. It finished my schoolin'.
