- Long ago there were no candles there and people used to kill a cow instead of a pig and they used to make candles with the tallow of a cow or a goat. They used to put the tallow into the bog and leave it there until it would be fit to melt. Then they used to put it into moulds and put a rush instead of a wick in the centre. They used to grow flax in our district long ago. When it was ripe they used to pull it and put it down in a bog and take it up and dry it and then weave it. Then it would be spinned.
