(gan teideal) (ar lean)
“There is a blessed well in Ballyhogue called "the cuckoo well".”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)the water of the well nine times in succession.
There is another well in Ballyhogue, and it was a great well for curing all kinds of deseases. But some man drowned pups in it, and the well dried up and broke up in another place. Long ago when a boy would be looking for a wife he would go to the girl's house, and throw his hat in the kitchen. If she wanted him she would keep the hat and then they would go to the priest and he would marry them, without any "calling out" as is done nowadays But if the girl didn't want the fellow she would throw out the hat again and he could go look elsewhere for his bride.
That is how that matches used be made in this county 70 years ago.
