    Long ago there used be great tug-a-war contests.

    they would get at each end of it and stick their heels in and pull. If the two men were of equal strength, it would be frightful pulling for they would both be then on a dead strain and maybe one of them would break a blood vessel pulling. It was a great thing long ago to be the strongest man in the neighbourhood, and persons often strained themselves pulling in order to get that name.
    Another plan people had of testing each other's strength was by trying to lift big rollers. Some rollers are very heavy almost fifty stone weight. Of course a person wouldn't lift the roller off the ground but he would lift one end of it, or put it standing on one end. There was a certain roller in the locality and only a few people were able to lift it. These people would be looked upon as great
