- In the Penal Times
Perhaps no other country in the world has suffered as did Ireland during the centuries for religion's sake. King Henry tried to introduce a new religion in Ireland but he did not succeed. The Catholics were so down trodden with the English that they thought themselves but of little importance. In the time of Queen Mary the Catholics won back their power in Ireland. All the churches were burned and the priests had to say Mass in lonely places. Many priests were betrayed. Lecky says that the objects of the Penal laws were three fold: - 1. To deprive the Catholics of all cival life. 2. To reduce them to a condition of extreme and brutal ignorance 3. The Catholic priest was banned and hunted and a price placed upon his head. At one time there was a reward of £5 to be paid to anyone who would bring in the head of a priest. a teacher. or a wolf and these were considered to be the three beasts which must be extirpated in Ireland. Sometimes, too they took over lands of poor Irish Catholics and hunted them out. An Irish Catholic could not have his children(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
