    Sometime later Rahan himself escaped to the continent as a stowaway on an American ship.
    Rahan owned a famous bloodhound and he prized him beyond all treasures.
    He kept the bloodhound for the purpose of protecting himself and his gold but when he was hiding from the Danes he took the bloodhound with him in fear that some harm would befall him. When he left Ireland the hound was left behind and it is said that the animal returned to the Moate and is hiding in the cave ever since to protect the gold and other treasures.
