  1. Long ago there was an old hedge-school in Kilkelly. This hedge-school was a little hut owned by Miss Flynn, and it was situated in one of her fields, now owned by Mr. Higgins in Kilkelly.
The teachers name was Miss Coyne, and she was a stranger. Ther was a number of scholars going to this school, and each of them had to pay one penny per week to the teacher, and this is the way she was paid.
The subjects that were taught in those hedge-schools were Irish, English, and Arithmetic. Great interest was taken in Arithmetic, so the scholars were very good at this subject.
Irish was taken by the teacher, and the scholars, and it was used in teaching other subjects.
