  1. Reith
    There were many hedge-schools in this part of the country in the Penal Days. There was one in Reith (Aughamore, Ballyhaunis, Mayo.) it was conducted in a barn. There subjects taught in it were Irish and English The master and pupils use to write with quill pens. They had no seats and they use to sit on the floor when the master had occasion to punish them he use to put the boy who was to be punished on another boys back and whip him. My Grandfather Patrick Boyle was taught in that place.
