    Beside Lord Sligo's demesne in Westport there is a house now occupied by Mr. Carrol. At the back of this house there is a hole which is supposed to be bottomless. It got its name from a tragedy that occured there. A horse and cart backed into it. The man in trying to save the animal's life fell in himself.
    At that time it was the custom for the women of Westport to wash
