  1. The roofs of the old houses were thatched, and some of them were slated but the slates were very small and thick. They thatched their roofs with rushes, oat straw, wheat straw, or barley straw.
They called the bed in the kitchen a settle-bed. The bed was able to shut up in the day time like a seat, and was able to be opened at night for two to sleep in. The old people had the fire place in the gable wall.
The floors were made of clay and some of them were made of flags. The clay floor in wet weather was very dirty.
