  1. In olden times when a man was going to get married. He took a friend of his and went out to look for a wife. After the match was made the man asked the parents for a dowry for the wife.
    Some rich parents gave the girl £20 or £50. Other parents gave the girl a wheel a chest or bed-clothes or cattle. Some parents who had a farm to spare gave it to the daughter. Lots of parents gave the girl furniture for her new house.
