- The dark churn is the churn in general use in small country farms. The milk is turned by means of a churn staff. The churn is made of oak. The churn is made up on three parts. The crib bottom and staves. The staves of the churn are first bound together. The Lagan is then cut with a Lagan saw. It is four feet and seven inches in circumference at the bottom. The same measurements are used for the top as is used for the lagan. Temporary hoops are then put on the staves of the churn and the bottom is dropped into the lagan. The length of the staves below the crib is one foot ten inches. The lower part of the churn is now firmly bound with hoops.
