  1. A Song

I shook hands with my spade, and I spit on my fist,

I shook hands with my spade, and i spit on my fist
And I started out the coachroad like a dashing young blade
From eight pence to nine pence the wages wore down
So I hired with a farmer near Kilkenny town
Myself and this big farmer, we made no delay
Twas in an old barn he put me to stay
And for my bed was an old winnowing sheet
When four thousand bus on my body did creep
Twas early next morning when the big farmer ran out
And twas at myself he gave a loud shout
Saying get up out of that, and make no delay
For the wages are high, and tis late in the day
