- Long ago the people used to thatch much the same as they thatch now-a-days.They use to cut "black sallies", and out of these sallies they would cut scallops about two feet long, and point then at each end with a thatchers knife. If the rods were too thick they would split them down the centre. They made little rings out of the fine rods, and used to put the scallops into these rings. The straw for thatching was soaked for about two days in water, and then it was taken out.The thatcher always starts at the "eave" of the house and works upwards. When one stroke is put on then a scallop is got and given a twist in the centre, and then bent in two and put down in the old roof, and the fresh straw is put in under it.(continues on next page)
