  1. Marriages frequently occur at every period of the year especially from June to November. The month of May or "the Blessed Virgin's month" is thought unlucky, also Saturday and Sunday.
On the fifteenth of August - the fair day in Portumna, matches are frequently made and are often broken on account of the dowry. Money is mostly given and sometimes stock and the grant to build a house.
It is customary to hold a party the night before the marriage at the bride's house at which all her friends and neighbours are present.
After the marriage, the married bride does not go home for a month and that is called "the monthly visit".
