priest aided him, and when he was coming down the stairs again, an army of soldiers was there to kill him. The story goes that a girl of the Vaughans was not as bad as the rest of the family, and she protected the priest. She would not let the soldiers put the priest to death. She is supposed to have guarded him out of Golden Grove safely. The man only pretended he was ill at first in order to catch the priest. God made him really ill then to punish him for the wrong he had done.
