   the thatcher puts a couple of rows of scallops in a fancy pattern on the top to secure back and front together so that the wind cannot raise the thatch. He also places a row of scallops flat near the lower edge of the roof and cuts the straw off with a shears to make the eave look nice. Oaten straw is generally used and looks very pretty when newly put up. Rye straw is sometimes used.

   My Grandfather who lived on the Birr Road near Roscrea used to go to a hedge-school. The name of the teacher that taught him was Mr. Lambe. Mr. Lambe used to go to a different shed in the district each day to teach the pupils. The pupils used to bring a sod of turf each day. The subjects taught were Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. Irish was not taught. They had slates to write on.
