- (continued from previous page)the thatcher puts a couple of rows of scallops in a fancy pattern on the top to secure back and front together so that the wind cannot raise the thatch. He also places a row of scallops flat near the lower edge of the roof and cuts the straw off with a shears to make the eave look nice. Oaten straw is generally used and looks very pretty when newly put up. Rye straw is sometimes used.
