  1. Once upon a time, there lived an old widow, who had an only son called Jack. On Christmas Eve, she went to town, to do some shopping, she left a turkey on the fire, and she told Jack not to let her burn.
    When the widow was gone, Jack looked at the turkey, and took a handful of her, to make sure she was not burned. Every time he looked at her, he took a handful of her. At last, none of her was left. At first he did not know what to do, but he thought of a great plan. He went to the cupboard, and he took out the turkey that was hatching, and threw her into the pot on the fire.
    He then went into the cupboard, to hatch the eggs himself. When his mother came home, she called out "Jack, Jack, where are you." Jack replied, "Guch, Guch, mother I am a hatching."
    "Come out of that you rascal, don't be disturbing the turkey, did you put pepper on the turkey, on the fire." said she, and off she went to the room to take off her cloak.
    Jack came out of his hiding place, seized the dog whos name was "Pepper," and threw him into the pot.
