    grooved surface of bittle. The thick side of bittle is at bottom & so deeper grooves are also at bottom.
    When the whole bed of thatch is up (from eave to ridge), it is then pared down with knife to even it.
    The glove of leather is sufficient to cover palm of hand & has opening to thumb. It protects had from scollop when being driven in
    When house is thatched, at ridge on each side of roof there is a triple row of scollops on outside of that. (This is the only place where scollops are visible)
    At eave the under surface of the thatch is pared away, to prevent a stumpish appearance
    In the last layer of each stroke the top of reed is turned down
