- In the Penal Times there were scores of poor people driven from their homes in this district. In the Penal Times a catholic could not own land valued at more than thirty shillings a year and if the son of a Catholic landowner declared him self a protestant he became the owner of his father's land and if a Catholic child declared himself a protestant he was taken from the care of his parents and brought up in the State religion.
