The potato was the food the people used and only the well-to-do could buy bread and even when they would get the bread it was black. Some of the poor people long ago got up at six o'clock and go herding cows for some rich man and that was the only way they had of making a living. The people were poor and they could not buy any meat but they bought fish. At that time you would get fourteen herrings for six-pence.
