- Denis Brown was a good man before the rebellion of 1798. He was favourable both to Protestant and Catholics and any one that wanted to speak to him could go to the Castle in Mount brown at certain hours.
At the beginning of the rebellion Denis Browne heard that the rebels were coming and he went away towards Ballinrobe on horseback. When he was up near Killawalla he got afraid that his enemies were (afraid) catching up to him. He came off his horse and he (crossed) exchanged his black suit with a beggar-man.
