- In days gone by cakes were made differently to what they are made now. In former days cakes were made of wheat and Indian Meal and these cakes were called Johnny cakes. These cakes were baked in a grid-iron placed on a tripod about nine inches over the fire. Cakes were also made of barley meal and were wet with cider. They also made oaten-meal cakes and these were wet with milk.
