    when dried sufficiently in the kiln it was Beetled i.e left on a round stone and beaten with a wooden pounder called a tuairigín

    afterwards it went through a process known as scutching. It was scutched with a thin board and a handle in it.
    the flax was beaten with this board and the coarse fibre taken out of it.
    When the flax was beaten enough it was cloven with a cloven tongs this tongs was made at the local forge and it was known as "Slúighe Ghairimit"
    The precess itself was known as "ag gairimit lín"
    This tongs was about 18 inches in length and the flax was cloven by being drawn between the teanga and the outer part of the slúighe
