    from the skins of calves and sheep and sometimes of goats and seals. The soles are made from the stouter hides of oxen and horses.
    Leather is a dear article so the shoe maker has need to be skillful and careful or else he may soon waste several shillings worth. An old proverb says,
    "It is easy to cut large throngs out of another man's leather".
    "The life of an old boot is to polish it" was an advice often heard in Tarbert.
