    of their lives, and by God's grace, escaped. As wonderful was the escape of the death cart attendants, but they were not spoken kindly of. They took risks innumerable to be sure, but they risked for pay, not for kindness, and appear to have been mostly a coarse kind of people, generally drunk and sodden, and treating the poor dead bodies with as little respect as they would dead dogs.
