  1. Up to quite recently this old ruin and plot surrounding it was used as a burial place for very young children and also for unbaptised children. In the Penal Days when the priests were hunted through the country, this was one of the places where mass was offered in secret - on a pile of stones.
    The old legend relates that an abbey would have been been built there on account of the holiness of the spot and its legendary connection with a holy hermit, only for a remarkable miracle.
    When about three feet of the the walls were built the masons' tools disappeared from their usual place of keeping and the masons were led by a lamb to the spot where Muckross Abbey now stands. Quite near Muckross is Cloghereen, where the lamb was supposed to make its first stop after leaving Keelclogherane.
