  2. On the eve of Saint John's Feast June 23rd bonfires are lighted on almost every hill in Ireland. All the young boys and girls gather turf timber, and oil for the fire. A bone is usually put into the fire and this is how it got the name bonfire. When the bonfire is lighted, the old people gather together and tell stories about
