- There are a lot of forts about this district. A fort is a military defensive work which is supposed to have been built by the ancient Irish. It is constructed in the shape of a circle. As you see them now they are covered with bushes, usually white-thorn, hazel and black-thorn.
It is considered very unlucky to interfere with any of these or cut any of the bushes as they are believed to be the homes of the fairies and misfortune will overtake anyone who interferes with these forts. It is also believed that the fairies visit from one fort to another and any person who builds a house or ditch in the(continues on next page)- Collector
