    that is the gardener, by the pig-tail. He beat him senseless and then flung him into the river. Poor Li-Chi jumped in after him and shared his fate.
    Their bodies could not be found but a beautiful willow-tree sprang up in the spot and night and day sighed a mournful dirge for the departed lovers. In its branches a pair of turtle-doves built their nest and lived there. It was said the the souls of the lovers had taken the shape of turtle-doves and found happiness at last.
