- There are two kinds of churns a machine churn and a common dash-churn. Churing is usually done once a week in my district. It generally takes twenty minutes or in some cases half an hour. People know when churning is made by looking at the dash. If there are little bits of butter on the dash it is a sign that the butter is made. The butter is lifted shortly after it is made. It is washed and salted to keep it from getting a tang.Corrections
