  1. 1. The person who was going to make the candles would go to the field and cut a bunch of rushes. Then he would peel a little of the green off the rush. When he would have this done to all the rushes he would cut the rushes in two and bind them in tight little bundles. The thickness of these was always measured by a half-penny. When (they) he had them in bundles he would soak them for a few minutes in melted fat. He then would leave them at the fire to dry, ready for use.
