- Long ago, oil lamps or shop candles were never used by the old people. They used to gather rushes by the banks of the rivers. Then they would bring them home and peel them and hang them up in bundles for a few days. Then they took them down and put grease in a little pot and dipped each candle separately in the grease according as they were wanted for use.Basket-making.
