  1. There are two-fairs held in Ballymahon every month, a pig-fair and a cattle-fair and the pig-fair is held on Friday and the cattle fair on Monday. These fairs are always held in the street but years ago they were held in the green and in other towns they are usually held in the fair-green.
    There are pigs to be sold at the pig-fair and cattle, sheep, and horses to be sold at the cattle-fair. When people sell their stock they always give a luck penny. With cattle and cows they give a half-crown or two shillings; and with sheep one shilling each; and sixpence
