    (a) The soft wind rustled in the branches and a solitary dog howled
    (b) A dry twig crackled under my feet. The rabbit raised its head and looked in my direction. I had no time to lose. I raised the gun to my shoulder and I fired both barrels. When the smoke cleared away there was my fine rabbit scurrying into its burrow.
    (c) The waves broke noisily upon the shingle and beat against the harbour wall. The sea-gulls rose and fell as if on hidden wings. When evening fell it brought a lull in the storm, and we were at last able to leave the house; to which we had been assigned all day.
