- The things used in the preparation of food in olden times were very few. We have a special vessel for every purpose nowadays. There were no grates in former times, so they had to do all their cooking on a hearth. The people use ranges, oil stoves, gas cookers, and other electric cookers. nowadays. A creel, piskin, or turf basket is used for carting in the turf to the house. To hang on the pots, pans, and other vessels on the fire we use a crook, bulls, and a crane.
