Long ago when the Townshends lived at Pallastown it happened one morning that a neighbouring farmer was taking a short cut across the lawn when to his amazement Miss Anne Townshend popped her head, all in curling pins, out of her window and demanded "Randals what do you want?" To be caught trespassing on the grounds of Cromwell's gentry was a serious crime. But Randal's presence of mind saved him from trouble. He swept the hat off his head, bowed before her ladyship and answered "If you plaise Miss Ann, Tis what brought me was to axe the loan of the caffriola (cabriolet) to carry my sister Catherine to Cork."
    "You can have it, Randals" said Miss
