The village in which I live is called French Hill. It is about three miles from Castlebar.
It gets its name from a skirmish which took place between the English and the French in the year 1798.
After the Races of Castlebar the English were closely followed by the French, and on reaching French Hill they made a halt and after a skirmish four French solidiers died. A hundred years after a monument was erected in their honour and the inscription on it tells how they met their death. It is cone-shaped and about forty five feet in height.
