    Long ago the Irish people had no candles and they made them by means of rushes and goose fat. The skin was removed from the rush and the pith was then (left) dipped in the fat and left to dry. In this way they made candles. The people long ago also made soap by means of tallow and washing soda. They boiled the washing soda, and the tallow together till the mixture was liquid.
