  1. Long ago the poor people were more plentiful than they are now. They used to go from door to door getting something in each house. Potatoes and meal they used to get from the people. Then they would go to the nearest shop and sell them. They would but tea and sugar out of the money. In Winter-time they used to get lodging from the farmers and sleep by the road in the Summer. They used to be very plentiful before Easter gathering eggs for Easter Sunday. They would not leave the house unless you gave them one or two eggs. Mary Kearns used to dye her hair and when the rain used to come it used to run down her face.
    Kit the Tinker was the worst. She used to steal the clothes from the clothesline and sell them and drink the money.
