  1. Sad is thy lot, Tyrconnell ! thy children weep to-day
    As they have wept for years and years beneath the alien's sway,
    Alas our bravest and our best within their prison's pine.
    The "Saggarth" and the simple serf their gloomy walls confine.
    I saw them pass- their armed guard were recreant Irish slaves,
    Who dragged their nobler brothers from their homes to prison caves -
    My heart, though but a woman's heart swelled high with grief's hot tide,
    To think that Ireland nurtured men so void of native pride.
    I saw them pass - 'twas Sabbath morn, the bells called men to prayer -
    But they were 'barred, those harmless serfs, in the
