    At morrow's dawn to lands unknown, their signal daylight's earliest ray
    More Irish homes made desolate, more Irish mother's, childless grieve
    Oh! bitter irony of fate that sends the gift, but to bereave.

    The hopeful stripling brave smiles to hide the grief his young heart feels
    And shed, unseen, the bitter tear his manly pride would fain conceal
    The tender maiden's burning eyes o'erflow with limpid crystals pure
    Erstwhile the gayest of the gay sits idly now with looks demure.

    The neighbours come to give good-bye and love and friendship rule the hour
