  1. Some years ago there lived in Gort a basket maker. He made farmer's baskets for holding potatoes, and other farm produce, and a small sized basket for farmer's wives, taking provisions from the town or country shops. The latter was made of sally rods, a very tine twig of flexible tough properties. The frame was made from the heaviest rod of the sally. He also made protection baskets for young calves, to present them eating hay. The basket made for use in the farm, was made from hazel rods.
