  1. Candles were first made from rushes peeled and dipped in tallow. This was called "rush light". Then after a time that was bent to the shape of a candle narrow at one end and wide at the other (this was done by a kinsman). There was a cotton thread held in place at the large end with a piece of stick and at the small end a raw potato. The tallow was melted and put into the and was then left to cool. The potato was then taken off and the candle was drawn out by aid of the stick.
